October Count

october count

Mark October 2 on your calendar – it’s October Count! The most important action you can take to support school funding is to make sure your student attends school this upcoming Wednesday. Much of public education funding from the State of Colorado is based on student count, and the official student count day this year is this Wednesday.

The “count window” the state observes is September 25 - October 9, and the key student count day is Wednesday, October 2. Please help us ensure all our students are accurately counted by having your student in class that day! If your child must be absent on October 2 due to serious illness, call our attendance line, 303.982.5140 to report the absence. Attendance during the “count window” will help counteract an absence on October 2, but it’s best to come to school that day.

-------------------------------------------------------------

As we are in the full swing of the school year, we want to stress the importance of being in class.  Students who miss class will never be able to get 100% of the information presented. Data collected from core classes in the 2018/19 school year found that students who earned a D or F averaged 13 absences in that class per semester.  Students who did not earn an D or F during the school year had an average of 4 absences in that class per semester.

If your child does miss class, the best time to make up work is during Advisement Wednesday mornings  7:30-9:00am.

Thank you for your support of Evergreen High School!

Speech and Debate Team

speech and debate

Evergreen High School's Varsity Speech and Debate Team is excited to kick off their second season! The team has grown substantially to over 20 members, and we are excited to attend our first tournament of the fall, Saturday, October 12th at Cherry Creek High School.

Additionally, we are fortunate and proud to announce that Andy Fulham has joined Mr. Harrison as an assistant coach for the team. Mr. Fulham brings years of experience from competing in Speech and Debate tournaments at the college level, attending national championships while enrolled at both Colorado State University and the University of Denver, as well as a passion for engaging with students in critical thinking exercises. Current debate topics include the use of Standardized Testing Scores in Undergraduate College Admissions, the impact of the Road and Belt Initiative on the European Union, and U.S. Arms Sales to Foreign Nations.

Students that are interested in joining the team are invited to attend our next meeting, Monday, September 30th from 2:40-3:45 in Room G-309, or to talk to directly with Mr. Harrison in person.

Vaping Parent Academy and Resource Fair

vaping

Join the Arvada Police Department for a Parent Academy for parents, guardians, and educators at all levels on Wednesday, October 2nd at Arvada High School. We've teamed up with Children's Hospital to bring this class to everyone and are excited to do so. We believe that vaping has been an issue and we are starting to get medical results that vaping is bad for the body, especially for teens.

In addition to the hour long class on vaping and substance use, we will be hosting a resource fair which will have different departments, agencies, and programs that could be helpful for parents and/or their students. We will also have a mobile bedroom which allows parents to walk through and try to find different hiding spots where teens may be hiding drug/vaping paraphernalia.

The resource fair will be from 6-7 p.m. with the class following from 7-8 p.m. See the attached FLYER for additional details.

Junior Classroom Visits

The Junior Counselors went into English classes this past week to begin the discussion of post secondary planning. Students were able to research colleges based on many different aspects, i.e. location, size, interests, etc.  This process will continue as students begin to narrow their search. We also talked about military options and working after high school.   The students were super engaged with the process and we hope this continues. If you have questions, have your student login to Naviance to show you their progress.  The picture below is one of the slides we used with our discussion as a guide.
