Hello Cougar Families and Happy Sunday,

We hope our families had a nice weekend, and hope our students enjoyed their day off on Friday. Here at EHS, we engaged in professional development on educational technology and instructional practice. This work helps us prepare for the 1:1 initiative in November as well as develop deeper instructional capacity as an organization. October Count

October 2nd

Mark October 2 on your calendar – it’s October Count! The most important action you can take to support school funding is to make sure your student attends school that day. Much of public education funding from the State of Colorado is based on student count, and the official student count day this year is October 2.

The “count window” the state observes is September 25 - October 9, and the key student count day is Wednesday, October 2. Please help us ensure all our students are accurately counted by having your student in class that day! If your child must be absent on October 2 due to serious illness, call our attendance line, 303.982.5140 to report the absence. Attendance during the “count window” will help counteract an absence on October 2, but it’s best to come to school that day.

As we are in the full swing of the school year, we want to stress the importance of being in class.  Students who miss class will never be able to get 100% of the information presented. Data collected from core classes in the 2018/19 school year found that students who earned a D or F averaged 13 absences in that class per semester.  Students who did not earn an D or F during the school year had an average of 4 absences in that class per semester.

If your child does miss class, the best time to make up work is during Advisement Wednesday mornings  7:30-9:00am.

Would you like to become CPR certified?  You could save a life!  PTSA will be hosting Evergreen Fire and Rescue in the EHS Library on October 24th from 3:00-6:30pm.  This is a free CPR course for all EHS students, family and staff. Sources of Strength

Counselors visited the 9th and 10th grade study hall classes this week and presented information on Sources of Strength.  They discussed the eight different pieces of the Sources of Strength wheel, giving special attention to Healthy Activities.  The students were able to work together to discuss different healthy activities that they use in their lives.  The members of the club will be creating a mural with the information within the next couple of weeks.

6 Week Grading Window

Wednesday, September 25th marks the end of the first 6 week grading window.  Grades will be posted in Infinite Campus on Monday, September 30th by 3pm.

This year we will be setting up and selling a variety of fresh local fruits and vegetables at the Buffalo Park Community Garden from 9:00 am to noon.  We also will have fresh homemade salsa's and jams for sale.

Athletics and Activities

A Message from your Athletic Department:

With fall upon us and summer ending this weekend, I look forward to an incredible rest of our fall season in athletics!  As we near the end of non-league games and enter into our league contests, I wanted to highlight some incredible improvements from last fall up until now:

1.)  Student attendance is up considerably at athletic events!  At the beginning of the year, I gave the entire student population a challenge to be as actively involved in EHS events.  The students have met this challenge and continue to attend our athletic events in droves!  I can't wait to see what the rest of the fall will bring when we get into our very competitive league play.  Way to go students!

2.) Sportsmanship has been better, but we can still improve, especially when we play our mountain rival, Conifer.  I'm asking that all students and parents remember that high school athletics is about building relationships, strengthening character, and having fun in a competitive environment.  We have to remember that our coaches, officials, and players are doing the best they can under the conditions at that time.  If I hear of any profanity or degrading verbiage, I will give one warning before asking that individual to leave the event.

3.) Our first home football game vs. Lewis Palmer was exciting!  Not only did we have a record breaking crowd for a non-rival game, but we had our pep band, marching band, Poms, and our newly formed Cheerleading Team rooting on our football team!  The energy was palpable!

4.) We are still working on facility improvements to ensure that we have the best athletic facilities possible, including some initial inquiry around upgraded lighting on our turf field and additional improvements to our baseball and softball fields.  Below are some of the facility improvements that have been made in the past 3 months:


  • A brand new turf field, complete with new goal posts and soccer goals/nets.
  • New soccer goals on the lower field.
  • A softball storage shed.
  • Improvements being made to our baseball/softball concessions and announcing booth.
  • New main backboards in our gym and a refurbished gym floor.
  • Mountain bike racks that will support our mountain biking team and give them the storage space they need for their fall season.

We love teaching character based education through athletics!  Your athletics department and coaches are first and foremost in these roles to pass on the love for sports, including skill development and the building of character through hard work, practice, and competition.  Of course we want to compete at the highest level, but we do so by remembering why we started this in the first place.  I began my career in education 18 years ago to have a positive impact on the life and lives of students and all those that I work with and for.  I know I've done this and I know this is being done in every single athletic program here at Evergreen High School.  We should be very proud of our coaches and student athletes who are in the "Arena" every day.


To quote Theodore Roosevelt,
"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

I look forward to a wonderful fall, including our homecoming week that will kick off on Monday, October 14th!  Our student senate is planning a wonderful week and a phenomenal homecoming dance on Saturday, October 19th.  I hope to see everyone in the community pack the stadium for our homecoming football game vs. Lincoln on Friday, October 18th @ 7:00 p.m.
