Athletics and Activities

Fall Sports Weekly Highlight (in alphabetical order)

Gymnastics

Varsity took 5th place at Regionals!

JV Gymnastics placed 2nd (out of 10 teams) at Leagues!

Also a couple of JV individual results:

Carsen Burns - 1st Place All Around

Roxy Sanford - 4th Place All Around

Mountain Bike

The Evergreen Mountain Bike Team wrapped up its 2019 season on October 19 and 20 in Durango. The team had 21 racers at State, with everyone "leaving it all on the dirt!"

Robbie Day concluded a stellar year by finishing 15 seconds behind his arch nemesis to take 2nd place for Varsity Boys.

Julia Wordley, in her first year EVER racing mountain bikes, finished a very respectable 15th.

Ben Leifer finished in 19th for Freshmen Boys, rounding out our top twenty finishers.

As a team, we finished in 9th Place in the  super competitive Division 1 at State, which, considering that many of the teams in the division fielded much larger teams, is very respectable.

For the regular season, we finished in 3rd overall in Division 1, South Conference, which is a huge accomplishment!

The team was also the NICA Team of the Month in Mountain Bike Action magazine, which is a huge honor!

We also volunteered with Jeffco Open Space to repair a long section of the turnpike across the meadow at Alderfer/Three Sisters, and we also had the largest registration for the team EVER, with 72 riders signed up to ride and approximately 50 racing during the regular season.

For our 10th season, is was truly a banner year! Ride on, Cougars!

Softball

The senior loaded Evergreen softball team entered the 2019 season with big goals and a lot of hype following their State qualifying season in 2018.  Joining this veteran squad was a skilled group of underclassmen eager to earn their spots. While they got off to a slow start in the winning column, battling multiple injuries and dropping several close games, the team refused to quit. They banded together and changed the trajectory of their season – working diligently to improve not only their physical skills, but their trust and belief in one another.  Their persistence soon paid off as they first knocked off mountain rival Conifer 16-0 and subsequently began conference play 4-0, including a memorable home win over the #1 ranked team in CO, Golden – two pivotal mid-season moments!

The team later earned their bid into post-season play and advanced out of Region 8 with statement wins over Falcon (11-0) and Mountain View (10-4). One week later the team entered the State Tournament as underdogs to the #1 seeded Golden Demons, knowing they were beatable and that they were 1 of 2 teams to complete that task this season. For 9 innings they battled - with confidence, heart, and desire – moving runs across the plate and making phenomenal defensive plays behind the Vermuelen sister pitcher-catcher duo who handled a dangerous Demons lineup with confidence and poise. Despite an amazing effort, the team came up 1 run short, losing 4-3 on a line drive down the 3rd base line in the bottom of the 9th inning – finishing their season 13-13-1.

While, Friday, October 25, 2019 marked the end of an era for 9 talented, and extremely special, Cougar Softball players (Elizabeth Vermeulen, Kathryn Vermeulen, Lucca Shields, Sidney Lawless, Charlotte Nuccio, Paige Richmond, Lauren Brandt, Aspen Grady, and Analee Zimmerer) they leave a lasting impression of love, trust, and respect on this program. Farewell Seniors & Thank You for all you have given to Evergreen Softball! Underclassmen, it’s your turn to take the wheel and continue the tradition of what it means to be a COUGAR!
