Hello Cougar Families and Happy Sunday,

Great news!

We want to thank the voters of Evergreen and Jefferson County for supporting 5A and 5B, which has made possible this exciting news. Beginning next year, all 5th and 9th grade students will be issued school devices, specifically Touch Screen Chromebooks. The devices will follow the students until graduation, with a plan to replace the devices every four years. Central administrators are hard at work outlining all of the logistics, timing, and details. At this time parents of incoming freshmen don’t need to purchase a personal device for their student to use for school next year. Here at EHS, we are hard at work developing training and allocating resources to prepare our faculty for a successful implementation of this initiative. Look for more communication from the district coming soon.

Two additional points here: First, as principal I am acutely aware of both the upsides and downsides to technology in the lives of our kids. At EHS, our goal will not be to use technology for technology’s sake, but to leverage technology where it makes sense to enhance the teaching and learning process.

Second, we are extremely fortunate to have a partner in planning for and funding training for this implementation, the Evergreen High School Education Foundation. The EHSEF has already funded the majority of our Chromebooks, as well as multiple training opportunities for our teachers. Going forward, this group will continue to partner with us in ensuring our teachers have access to opportunities associated with best practices in educational technology. The EHSEF is currently looking for new board members, as many of our current members’ children will be graduating this year! If interested, please contact Board President Dan O’Neil at [email protected].

Thanks all, and see below for additional important announcements and information.

Food Drive

Dear Evergreen Community,

My name is Jacob Austin and I am a senior at Evergreen High School. This year I am doing a Capstone project with ECHO food bank. Evergreen Christian Outreach (ECHO) is a local, well connected, and well organized non-profit that helps fight hunger and financial stress in Evergreen and surrounding communities. I will be studying with ECHO and my research will come from organizing a food drive coordinated with ECHO and Evergreen High School.

In Evergreen and nearby communities, ECHO helps 1,248 households, which means over 2,000 people are in need of our help. It is time to give back to this beautiful, supportive, and loving community in which we all live. If you are truly grateful for all you have, and have a little extra to give, please consider helping those that don't have what they need to survive.

A food drive, starting the week of April 15th, will be hosted in math classrooms at Evergreen High School. Each math teacher has been assigned supplies to collect for ECHO.  Students can bring in the goods to their math class all week. Below are the items each math teacher will be collecting.

Ms. Berninzoni-Canned tuna/chicken and toothpaste/toothbrushes

Changing the College Conversation from “Getting In” to “Fitting in”

April 15, 2019

6:30pm to 7:30pm

EHS Auditorium

The recent college admissions scandal has brought to light the frenzy that is going on around college admissions. As a society, we’ve bought into the idea that the more selective the college the better it must be, and in order to be set-up for success in life you’ve got to attend one of the "best" schools. Students feel relentless pressure to get high grades and stellar test scores while being a star athlete that does heroic community work.

It’s time to change the conversation.

During this session we will discuss how the world of college admissions has changed, why it changed, and the need to stop focusing on selectivity and rankings and start thinking about finding colleges that are a fit. Come learn how to approach college planning from a perspective of growth and opportunity, rather than fear and scarcity. Discover how to find colleges where your student will feel comfortable being themselves, and yet will be challenged to learn and grow.

All Evergreen parents and students welcome.

Presenters:

Jill Athenour is a private college counselor. She has 25+ years’ experience in the education field and has earned the designation of Certified Education Planner (CEP), achieving the profession's highest standard. Jill visits over a dozen campuses each year, attends national conferences, and participates in professional activities and organizations to keep up with college admissions trends. Jill has lived in Evergreen for 27 years and has two children, both of whom graduated from EHS.

Merrie Wrinn is a EHS school counselor with 7 years’ experience. Merrie has earned her MA in school counseling, NCC and LPC. Merrie attends yearly college admission professional development programs and is a member of the College Fairs of Greater Denver. An Exciting Message from a Community Member and our area’s Field Hockey Assistant Coach

My name is Meghan Hollenbach and I am an assistant coach for the Dakota Ridge High School Field Hockey team. This team actually accounts for all students in Jefferson County, which is why I'm reaching out to the community!

Last season we didn't have any interest from students in the Evergreen or Conifer school district and we want to try and advertise this great fall sport to more girls in the hopes that they want to come out and play!

In the fall, we practice down at the Rooney Road Sports Complex after school from 5pm - 7pm. I do live and work in Evergreen and commute down to the field after work, so I know it's a bit further of a drive than practices in other sports might be, but depending on interest we might be able to organize carpools or something!

Regards,

Meghan Hollenbach

If you have interest in this amazing sport and opportunity, please contact Head Coach Jessica Summers at [email protected]!  Looking forward to seeing you all out on the field next fall!

POMS tryouts

RESULTS

Boys Lacrosse has started the season 1-2 overall, battling some tough opponents.  They lost their first game against Fairview by one point (7-6), but came back at beat Battle Mountain on 3/22 by a score of 10-9.  What a great game as they came from behind, in a complete team effort, to take down the Goliath Battle Mountain.  Just this past week, the team had a disappointing loss on Fairview’s turf, losing 15-6.  The Coug’s are ready to be back on their home turf this upcoming week with their first two home contests against Cheyenne Mountain and Air Academy!  They headed up to Vail Mountain on 4/5 for a tough match against Vail Mountain.  Results to come…..

Girls Lacrosse
had a busy week with four varsity matches in a week!  In their first game of the season, Evergreen had a sizable win over Thompson Valley, defeating them 16-2!  The very next day they traveled down the hill to Bear Creek where they beat them 13-2.  On to Chatfield just two days later, where they had a disappointing loss, 15-6.  Lauren Spence’s defense was top notch with had 17 saves in the Chatfield game.  The girls wish they had another shot at that one, but they will have another chance to show their dominance when they travel to Pine Creek on Saturday, 4/6.

Girls Soccer
came from behind in exciting fashion to beat Conifer 3-2 in overtime at the Mountain Bowl last Tuesday.  They were down 0-2 with ten minutes to play and but came out on top! One goal by Kelly Shaub and two goals by Luisa Weiner including the game winner in OT.

The girls beat Air Academy 4-3 on Thursday, coming from 1-3 down in the last 25 minutes to win the game in regulation.  Luisa Weiner again had the game winner! Kelly Shaub, Myla Stewart and Rami Rapp all had goals as well.

It takes a lot of heart to come from behind to win games and this group did it twice in three days!

Evergreen Girls Golf competed in the Jeffco League tournament at the Broadlands Golf Course on Wednesday last week in a field of 45 varsity girls representing ten Jeffco 4A teams.  Evergreen was led by Kate Lisle who fired an 88, followed closely by Riley Roberts and Lainey Urbas at 93 and 94, respectively. Lainey added an exclamation point with her first ever Eagle on the 272 yard hole 16 (picture). Evergreen took 2nd Place at the tournament behind Littleton, but good enough to move the Evergreen girls into first place in the Jeffco League for the spring season. The varsity girls compete in their next Jeffco League tournament on Monday at 9 AM at Deer Creek Golf Club at Meadow Ranch.

Evergreen girls played Monday, April 1 at Heritage Eagle Bend in the Grandview Girls Invitational. The tournament was a best ball partner event which provided a great opportunity for all the golfers to experience high school competitive golf.  Junior Rachel Malpass had an individual score of 104. She partnered with freshman Élan Lamas, playing in her first 18 hole tournament. Sophomore Merin Voelker partnered with freshman Jordan Crawford in the best ball format.  The course was a difficult, hilly layout which proved to be challenging for many players in the tournament. Overall it was nice opportunity for the newer members of the EHS Girls golf team to play together in a supportive environment.

Cougar Baseball

Varsity has been playing a heavy 5A competitive schedule is currently 5-4. Cougars traveled by bus to Arizona during the Spring Break and played 3 games and held a number of practices on H.S. fields.  They also traveled on Friday to the Western Slope. But will be home this week.

Congratulations is due to Will Kapner who is currently ranked #1 for 4A all Jeffco teams with a Batting Average of .625 (15 hits on 24 at bats in 33 plate appearance).  Kapner is also ranked #2 in all 4A Jeffco with an .679 OBP with 7 walks, 1 Sacrifice, 1 Hit by Pitch and 15 Hits at 24 At Bats.

Kudos to Bryce Pearson who is ranked #1 in 4A Jeffco with 3 Homeruns in 9 games played.  Includes 1 three run HR and 2 Grand Slams that were hit in one game against 5A Highlands Ranch H.S. when Evergreen beat them 18-3 on 4/2.  Pearson had 9 RBIs that game.  Pearson currently holds the #1 ranking for 4A all Jeffco for RBIs at 15 and is ranked 7th with a .679 Slugging Percentage.

All these accomplishments have been made even though Evergreen is the only 4A Jeffco Team whose field is still not playable due to the wet Spring we are experiencing. Let’s get out and show some EHS spirit at their 1st home games this week vs Green Mountain and D’Evelyn.
